I was fortunate enough to bump into these two brilliant girls who were helping backstage at the London heats of the Great Big Dance Off on Monday.

They agreed to have a chat about how they got into performance and the platforms that led them to now perform with two excellent dance crews 'Buckness Personified' and 'Project G'.

What came through was that you don't necessarily have to have Parents taking you along to Ballet and Tap from the age of Two or whatever to succeed now!

In fact, if the interest comes from you, your desire to get better can sometimes have more longevity.

Well done to these two girls for all your hard work backstage, and I hope to see you again in the future :)

Half Moon Young People's Theatre

Half Moon in Limehouse are one of the reasons I became passionate about urban youth theatre.  After completing a work placement with The London Bubble in Southwark, a lovely man named Adam from the company invited me along to see a collaborative piece called 'Conversations' a transition project between a primary and secondary school in Swanley.

Held at the venue in Limehouse, the piece had an original urban soundtrack, rapping schoolchildren which celebrated the different backgrounds the children came from:

'I'm an immigrant and I'm proud, when I came to this country my life turned around."

I then saw 'Locked In' whilst studying in Plymouth at 'The Drum' and again was impressed by the hip-hop drama shedding light on stories from inner- city youth.
Half Moon is a fantastic resource for pupils of all ages, and aims to give a creative platform for young Londoners to perform as well as attend theatre shows that raise issues and examples that are within their compass.

Shared stories are an integral part of our life learning, and can impact a child as an audience member in a profound way. The connections with characters can be mirrored in their own lives and this powerful tool should be used in education more.

I would thoroughly recommend Half Moon as a resource for Teachers in London and elsewhere. I enjoyed using the material when I taught as a primary Teacher in Oxfordshire, mainly to bring some 'urban-ness' to the children's lives and to help them to see out of the bubble. It always provided a sparky learning experience and some excellent discussions.

Below is an example of the work they do and the kind of production you may see there.
Keep checking their website, and I'll do my best to update any new performances that may be engaging to a young audience who need something exciting to engage them.
